Leaving the market Frank hears a tune that catches his attention. He places his grocery bag in his panel trunk and walks around the corner of the building next to the parking lot. He sees 4 musicians, 3 were playing guitars and the fourth was playing a gourd and had a surfboard nearby. Frank listened and was transformed into a different state of mind as the group conveys their talents of what they felt about the song. The tune was different to the songs that Frank had heard on radio or records, more of a contemporary sound of slack key guitar.
As they finished Rocky who was behind Frank and was also listening to them play said “Really cool”. Frank turns around and says “I like that song” then walking over to the group he asks “Do you guys play at clubs”. “No just outings and get together for family and friends” said one of the musicians. “Just wanted to say I like your song it was very nice” said Frank. “Mahalo” said the same musician as his three friends that were playing with him gave the shaka sign.
Frank walks over to the gourd player and ask “Do you surf”. “Yes I do, I brought over my board to show my brothers what I am riding” said guy with the gourd. “I live on the North end of the island in Kapalua a small town with old rustic type buildings and a few plantation type houses built a few years ago, I live in the older type of house. I make my own surfboards and surf mostly by myself at Honolua Bay. Sometimes a friend or two will go out with me. Oh my name is Kapinoa, but my friends call me Kapi” said Kapinoa.
“Good to meet you Kapi, I’m Frank and that is my brother Rocky over there” pointing to Rocky as he waves back. “That’s Hano, Cecil and Sonny” mentioned Kapi as he pointed to the guys from right to left. “We make surfboards too” said Frank as moved over to Kapi’s koa surfboard and asked “How do you like your board” as he lifted the front end using both hands, looking at the front then down each rail line to the back before placing it back onto the ground. “It’s Ok, but I’m going to make another” said Kapi. “Would you like to see our surfboards, it’s in the back of my panel truck just around the corner” said Frank.
“Sure” said Kapi as he placed his gourd next to his surfboard and proceeded to follow Frank and Rocky. The other guys started strumming a few cords and started talking about different arrangements on other songs and Sonny started strumming his guitar and went into a rift that the others would listen to. Frank, Rocky and Kapi were at the panel truck and Frank got out his surfboard and said “Feel the weight of my surfboard”. “Wow, this is light” said Kapi looking at the outline and rail contours, then turning it over to look at the bottom.
“How is that dolphin keel working for you, it’s the first time I have seen one on a surfboard” said Kapi. “It works great when you do a turn and coming down from the upper area of the wave” answered Rocky wanting to be in the conversation. “Say, the wave are breaking at Honolua Bay, why don’t you guys come over to my house tomorrow and we can go surf there” said Kapi. “Yeah Ok, how do we get to your house?” asked Frank. “Do you have something to write with and a piece of paper. I can draw you a map of how to get to my house” said Kapi. “Yes I do” mentioned Frank going to glove compartment in his panel truck. “Here you go” he said handing the pencil and paper to Kapi. After looking at the map Frank said “We will leave at dawn and be at your place around 7 tomorrow morning”. “Ok, that sounds good. My friends and I have a party to play at this afternoon. So will see you guys tomorrow” said Kapi as he was returning to the guys in the band.
“Well ready to go” said Rocky. “Yeah, let’s get going” said Frank as he put away his surfboard back into his Panel Truck. Driving up the dirt road to the house Frank and Rocky were in discussion of the shop that they were building. After parking in front of the shop they walk over to the yet to be surfboard workshop discussing where the shaping rack should be in one room and where the single roll of wall rack in the other room will be located. Stepping out of the shop Rocky says to Frank “You know I think surfing is going to be more popular in the future than today and I think we are one of a few who are making surfboards on this island”.
Frank looked at Rocky and said “It’s an investment we have taken to further our knowledge in surfboard building, not many guys are going to build a shop for surfboards and besides they don’t have a clue on what to do regarding design and how a surfboard will ride. Well Kapi will be the exception” saying it with a smile. “At first this was a hobby to us to make our own surfboards and it still is, but we can make money from it as an income. We will need a name for our surfboard, what do you think should we name our surfboards” asked Rocky.
“What about Rocky and Frank Surfboards” said Frank. “What about Rogus Surfboards” suggested Rocky. Frank looked around and said “Maybe something that describes our location or our frame of mind”. “What about: RF Surfboards” said Rocky. “Yeah, that sounds good, let’s call it RF Surfboards” replied Frank. “Our logo can have palms trees swaying with the initials of RF in between the palm trees and waves breaking in the background” replied Rocky.
“You know that sound really great, but there isn’t many surfboard riders on this island. We would need to sell our boards on Oahu to make it profitable” said Frank. “Yeah, you’re right let’s give it some more thought and look into some of the details we would have to do to make it worthwhile. Our cost here for supplies will be more compared to being in Oahu and shipping will be added expense from here” said Frank. “Well, we can still make them here at our own pace and just continue to do more research and just enjoy being able to build our own and surf on it and let the quality of the surfboard spread by word of mouth, then decide to go commercial or not. But having a name on our surfboard is a good idea” replied Rocky.
“Have you given the computer idea much thought yet Rocky” asked Frank. “Other than mailing a request for the list of classes at the university, I haven’t given it much thought and was thinking about asking dad more about it” said Rocky. “Me too, we should have another meeting with dad and talk about it sometime this coming week” replied Frank as they walked over to Frank’s car to take the boards out and put them back in the garage. The next morning Frank and Rocky were driving pass Lahaina and looking at the map that Kapi drew for them. The distance from Lahaina to Kapalua look short on the map, but took close to an hour to find since mistaking one dirt road for another.
Driving up to his two bedroom house that was constructed in 1911 showed the signs of wear on the roof and steps, with the paint of the house had faded to a light tan color. Kapi was out in the front yard with his surfboard leaning on the front picket fence. “Hey morning you guys. Would you like to see my workshop in the back of the house” said Kapi. “Ok” said Frank and started to follow Kapi around the house to the backyard.
“Well here it is” as Kapi opened the door to the shed, a small shack near the house next to a path that led into a jungle of vegetation. Inside were 2 sawhorses with a piece of Koa resting on the sawhorses. Next to the rack was a small table with hand tools that Kapi used to shape with. Around the room was wood shaving in the corners of the room that had a wooden floor. “So that is your next board” asked Rocky. “It was until I saw your surfboards. I want to make one or get one made like yours” said Kapi. “I brought my girlfriend’s board so you can use mine. We can make you one if you like” said Frank.
“Changing the subject let go surf” mentioned Rocky. “Ok, I will show where to park at the bay” said Kapi as he closed the door to his shop and started walking to the front yard. It wasn’t long before they were on the main road and making a turn on the east side of the bay along the cliff area and parking about quarter mile from the road. Getting out and looking down on the waves, Frank and Rocky were surprised at the waves breaking in good shape. “It looks good, ready to go surf. I will show you the way down and where to jump off from and how to get back in” said Kapi. Both Frank and Rocky became anxious and were hurrying to put on their trunks and get out into the water as Kapi took his time.
From a box inside the panel truck Rocky pulls out 3 pieces of 3/8 inch rope that had a leather loop sewn into the rope. Rocky would take the opposite end of each leash and tie it to a hole that was in the fin keel. Looking at Kapi, Rocky says to him “We hadn’t had a chance to use these leashes before, but I think we will need them here. After getting into the water slide the loop through your foot and the slip knot will tighten to your ankle. This way you won’t lose your board into the rocks was the idea behind it”. “You guys are unreal, your way of thinking is what like, it so advance” said Kapi. So Kapi showed the way down the path he usually takes, then to the jump off spot into the water. Placing their leashes on after getting in, they would paddle out into the lineup.
The guys had a fun time surfing Honolua Bay with nobody out and the waves were 4 to 6 feet peeling across into the bay. Kapi paddles for a wave and is taking off. Frank watched Kapi catch his first wave on the balsa board and could tell his surfing had changed. At first he started to stick his right foot into the wave, but stopped and put it back on the board and began leaning into a turn like he had watch Rocky had done. The he was picking up speed and leaned into a slight cutback before turning again and continued getting use to the surfboard to the end of the ride. Rocky had caught the wave before and was watching Kapi on his entire wave as he glided up to where he was sitting. “Ho, I need to get one of these boards. They are the best” said Kapi excited about the ride he just had and told Rocky how stoke he was as they paddled back out.
Frank was smiling as he said to Kapi “Hey, that was a good ride, what do you think of the surfboard”. “The Best, my surfing just went up a notch and I’m stoked. I want to get one of these surfboard Frank. When can you make me one” asked Kapi. “I’m getting some balsa in a week and it should take a couple of weeks to make, you most likely can have one in a month” said Frank. Rocky had brought lunch for everyone and after their first session of 3 hours, they would go in have lunch and hang around the cliff before they walked over to a grove of coconuts palms around the point to check out the coastline. After resting for an hour they would go back out for another 4 hours session. “My arms feel like spaghetti, I’m going in” said Rocky. “Ok, I’m going catch a couple more waves and go in myself” said Frank seeing another set coming in. Kapi had gone in and was sitting at the side of the cliff by the water’s edge. Rocky approached the rocks and Kapi pointed to where he should come in at and helped grab his board as Rocky climbed on the rocks.
After Frank went in and standing by the panel truck they talked about the waves that they rode and how much fun that they had. It was getting late and Frank decided it was time to head home and drop Kapi off. “Let me draw you a map of where we live and you can come out and visit us and the shop in about a week. We are still working on it and should be finished with it in about a week” said Frank. “Great, I will stop by in about a week. The waves will be like this for a few more days. Why don’t you guys come back tomorrow” said Kapi. “You betcha, these waves are fun. See you tomorrow” said Frank. “Yeah, see you tomorrow said Rocky.
Hovering in a cloud above Mauna Kea a space ship is being undetectable while a conversation was taking place between Outaforium and Zeyu “Outaforium, I have received a transmission from our mother ship on the dark side of the moon for your return there and then back to Etobiius to meet with the high command” mentioned Zeyu telepathically as the two were looking at each other in the control room of the space ship. “It must be my time to reacquaint my status in front of the council and tell of my ideas here” suggested Outaforium. “This may be true or they may replace you with another. I’m thinking I and the rest of the crew will be called back at a later date to Etobiiusl also” conveyed Zeyu. “We have been around close to 40,000 years on this planet and our usual life expectancy on Etobiius is more than twice that. Perhaps there is something about to go extinct and that is why I am being called back to get my views on the matter” mentioned Outaforium. “Yes, that could be it or it may be something else. Only time will tell” Zeyu communicated back.
Outaforium was visualizing the statement made by Victor of him being a knight in a four dimension chess board and the next move that Outaforium was going to do was have Victor become an advance computer programmer at the beginning of a new technology. “In our earlier days here on this planet there were different species from different universes we have come in contact with over the centuries. Some have been peaceful, others have been violent and we have fought. I have looked into the future and wanted to change something that I saw” answered Outaforium. “Yes, I too have seen what you are getting at and it makes sense to me, but our high council knows this too and would like to communicate with you more about it before them. That is the reason for your departure” concluded Zeyu. Outaforium bowed and replied “As they wish. But I have the power to pursue my views, since I know the outcome of what will be I will continue with the plan” replied Outaforium.
“You will be sent to the Mother Ship from there transferred to the travel ship for the Star Gate. You will enter the Sun on the Winter Solstice and travel for two earth months before reaching the Orion constellation and our solar system where Etobiius is located. Then your meeting and from there the decision of what to do next” said Zeyu. “Before then I will talk with Victor and tell him that he will be advancing 30 years into the future. It will be a blink of an eye for him like before and still be the same age as he is now. After I have done so I shall prepare to be on my way” said Outaforium as he closed his eyes and went into the transport chamber and travel back down onto the island where Victor was working.
Knocking on Victor’s office door, Outaforium hears the remark “Come in” and proceeded in. “Oh, Outaforium good to see you, how have you been” asked Victor. “I’ve been fine and doing the same. I have something to tell you Victor. I have been called back to my planet of Etobiius and will be leaving shortly” Outaforium replyed. “You are telling me there was a planet called Etobiius and the island that we lived on back then was named after your home planet of Etobiius” questioned Victor.
“Yes that is true. It is something I have kept secret all this time knowing I would be telling you this today” said Outaforium. “That is interesting to hear, where is Etobiius and will you be returning” asked Victor. “Etobiius is in the constellation group of Orion, the planet orbits the Orion star and is about 20 planets from the Great star. Our planet is a little larger than yours, with 3 moons and a smaller planet beyond the moons by 500,000 miles that orbits around Etobiius and the moons. Our civilization is younger than some and much older than others. It is millions of years old and that is why we have developed into whom we are” pausing before continuing.
“Most likely I will be back in 30 of your years if the High Council approves to do so. In your case regarding meeting again it will be a blink of an eye” said Outaforium. That reminds me; I did tell you, that you will live out your life in this time zone, but that has changed since I will be returning back to Etobiius. “I’ve known for quite some time that you are unique and respected your powers” said Victor with a different outlook on Outaforium. “I will discuss more of what you will be getting yourself into by becoming a computer programmer” continued Outaforium knowing he had a lot to convey in the short amount of time before his departure.
“I wasn’t expecting to leave this time period Outaforium, but I trusted you this far and haven’t lost confidence in your overall idea that I’m fully not aware of. I know you mean well and that is the premise I base my acceptance on doing what you ask” said Victor. “Then I will let you decide if you and Artemesia would like to continue and let your family stay where they are or go with the two of you and remain a family together. You will continue to grow together and you will give leadership and guidance.
Whereas if they have other ideas and want to live their own lives the way they want to then that is that. For if there is a split and they stay where they are, their age different will change and they will be at the same age as you and Artemesia are right now when you meet them again” described Outaforium as Victor looked concern of what he is getting himself into. “I need to talk with Artemesia about this and my children. Let me give you my answer after talking with them” said Victor.
“I will return in 30 days to get your answer here in your office” replied Outaforium. “How can I get a hold of you before then if something comes up and I need asks certain things that I’m not aware of now” asked Victor. Handing Victor a business card he said “Call this phone number on the card and let it ring 3 times and hang up. I will know where you are at and stop by to answer any questions you may have” before pausing for a moment again.
“Be prepared to move into a different time whatever the decision you make, the time period that you will be in is 30 years from now in 1963. The location where you will be working at is San Jose, California area. The water is much colder there than here in Hawaii if you should continue surfing. Otherwise you can take up golf and sailing if you like. Make arrangements now to have the location you have here or another place to your assets. Prices in the future will be much higher than currently. I will leave it up to you to decide how you would like things to be with the knowledge you already have. You won’t have much time to make decision in how you want your wealth and properties situated, so keep that in mind” said Outaforium before shaking Victor hand. Just before he stepped out he said “Your abilities in the future is going to benefit generations of people” that said he patted Victor on the shoulder and walked out the door.
Sitting at his desk Victor got out a few sheets of paper and began writing things down of what he could do within the time period Outaforium had said. After filling out a list of what to do he called Artemesia and mentioned what he and Outaforium had discussed and that he was coming home to have a meeting with her before they talked with their children. He then had a talk with his regional manager of taking a leave of absence for personal reasons. On his way to the airport he made arrangements with a shipping company for a pass to San Francisco.
Later that day Victor and Artemesia had a long talk about what would be the right path to take and wrote down more things that would be of value in 30 years to have. That evening Victor and Artemesia had Frank and Rocky over for a meeting and their girlfriends were at the guest house planning on Sherry wedding to Rocky. Velidia and Joe were in Honolulu looking at furniture and house items and would be informed after they got back.
Meanwhile at the kitchen table Victor was suggesting about making another move and how they would feel about the idea. “I don’t know dad, Sherry and I were looking around for a place, we really like living here on Maui” said Rocky. “Roxanne has told me she wants to move back to Southern California to be closer to her family. I told her I was going to stay here. Where were you going to go dad; back east to New York?” asked Frank. Victor looked at Artemesia then at Rocky and Frank and said “Outaforium has another time period for me and your mother to be and wanted know if my family would like to go. It is 30 years from now in 1963 on the mainland”.
Rocky and Frank had the look of having seen this situation before and were hesitant of doing the move into a different time period again. “What happens if we don’t go this time” asked Rocky. “When we meet again you will be the same age of us” remarked Artemesia. “That seems awkward and weird” said Frank. “Your mother and I said the same thing to ourselves. That’s why we wanted you, Frank and Velidia to decide for yourself what you wanted to do. Life is short” said Victor. Frank and Rocky said they would stay. “I will have a talk with Velidia when she gets back, but I know she wants to stay also” said Artemesia. They would talk for a couple hours more before it was time to call it a night.
Victor had to catch his plane ride in the morning and be at the Honolulu harbor to catch his ship to San Francisco in the afternoon. His trip to the Bay Area was to purchase land during the 1930’s and have it ready for him in the 1960’s. His stay would last a week before his return trip back. Getting off in Oakland and renting a car he drove around to real estate offices in San Jose on his first day there and got a room at the Hotel Sainte Claire.
The next morning Victor drove south to the outskirts of San Jose to the town of Morgan Hill before traveling south to a dirt road that would become hwy 129 to Watsonville. After driving around Watsonville looking at properties Victor drove north to Santa Cruz where he spent 2 days there at a hotel near the Boardwalk. His first morning was to travel over to Cowell’s beach and watch a few surfer riding some waves, as he watch his thoughts returned to Hawaii and the surfing there. After thirty minutes he went over to a real estate office and asked about houses near the ocean. The price range was from a few thousand to $15,000.
Victor got the addresses of some of the locations and went to see them. He brought along a camera to take pictures of the house he would purchase so he could show Artemesia. The second location was an open lot on the end of Atlantic Ave. next to a river mouth.Walking around the lot and the ocean view Victor decided to get the land and started taking pictures of the beach next to the lot, the river mouth and the houses in the area. He decided to get the property because of the view and the potential of the lot.
Returning back to San Jose there was another property that came available while he was there during that week. A 40 acre open lot in San Jose east of Hwy 101 was available for $40,000, Victor thought it was a good deal and added it to his list. With his resident locations taken care of he was soon back on board the Ocean liner to Hawaii and planning what to do next. After 5 days Victor had returned to Honolulu and was home that afternoon. Having the photos developed on board Victor showed Artemesia the places that he had bought and would build houses on them. It took 17 days of getting there and back with what he needed to do. Now Victor has 13 days left before beginning the transition into his new lifestyle.
