EPISODE 8 “A Glimpse of What will Be”
Leo was surveying the years of the Stock Market and was seeing a pattern of Bull and Bear markets as the yacht he was watching veered north with its main and jib up. Leo turns to Flo and said “57 years from now there will be a great collapse. Many people will lose their wealth and others will gain new wealth.” What do you mean Leo” asked Flo. “There will be a great reset where the dollar will lose much of its buying power and many will go hungry.”
“It sounds like a terrible time” said Flo. “We will keep that in mind as we go forward” replied Leo sitting back and visualizing what stocks will increase in value through the years.“Your mind is wondering at all the possibilities that are before you. I too have experience a change in my way of thinking, but wasn’t quite sure until you mentioned that Hokuao had passed on” said Flo sensing Leo’s thoughts with a highly enhance female intuition. “This chess board that we are on has expanded exponentially in many different ways since Kai’ike has passed on. Instead of making a move to advance the completion of the game, I now find myself viewing different concepts in an advance dimension” answered Leo while looking around and then back at Flo.
“Let’s go play golf and take our minds off of the past and the future for now. I will call and make a Tee time” said Flo. “Ok, sounds good to me” said Leo smiling. After their round of golf and back at the parking lot putting away their clubs, Flo says to Leo “You putted really good today, as if you could see the line and how the ball will roll”. “I knew I was in this groove, where my senses were right on” said Leo while placing the bags into the trunk of the car. “Well, you broke 80 and shot a 78 for the first time and I suspect it won’t be the last” said Flo looking at the score card before putting it away in the glove compartment. “You shot well yourself my dear” said Leo as he got into the driver side of the car.
A few days later at the boatyard where the interior of their newly acquired boat was being refitted Leo and Flo are going over the layout they would like to have done with George. The galley was updated with the latest items and in the main salon a reduction in size to accommodate the enlargement of the head and shower room. The cushions and woodwork in the salon was done to brighten the space. The aft state room had a new mattress and more storage space added to it. The bow quarters will have surfboard racks for the surfboards above the single berths on either side.
“Well Leo and Flo what are you going to name her” asked George. “We are going to name her “Going with the Flow” said Flo as Leo just smiled and didn’t say a word regarding the name. “How long do you think it will take to get her done” asked Leo. “We are looking at 3 months at the minimum and 5 months at the max’s” replied George. “The sooner the better would be nice” said Leo. “We will do our best to get her done sooner Leo. But we have a few boats that we are finishing up on and once that is taken care of we can proceed at a faster pace” said George. “We appreciate your concern and we know you will do your best” said Leo extending his hand and shaking George’s hand as they were leaving for the airport to return home.
After their meeting in San Diego with George, Leo had another meeting with his stockbroker and Flo with the architect regarding their Clothing line facility building. Their schedules started to pile up with people to meet and places to be. A few weeks later Leo and Flo are anchored at Cat Harbor in Catalina enjoying a three day weekend getaway. “Leo do you want to take a hike this morning and see if we can view some buffalo” said Flo. “Ok, let go this morning and be back by noon” said Leo. After walking for two hours on Banning House Road and not seeing a buffalo this day, they decided to turn around and walk back to the harbor.
After spending a quiet getaway they have returned home and are going for a late afternoon surf session nearby. After their surf session and having taken a shower Leo is going over the stock report in the local paper. Flo was going over some bids from a few general contractors and reviewing the process of what to do next regarding Flow Surfwear.
“Leo lets meet at lunch tomorrow” said Flo While having lunch at a hamburger fast food restaurant Leo is listening to Flo describe her ideas. “Leo I’m going to start an advertising campaign in a surfing magazine relating my clothing line to surfing and put some ads in the local papers having surfers riding waves. What do you think” she said.
“That will be fine, I will ask around about surf photographers at some of the shops and get a list together. Changing the subject I bought some shares in IBM, Xerox, Standard Oil, Goodyear and Firestone tires, GM and Ford for starters” said Leo pausing for a moment before continuing in his train of thought “Fast Food Chains are going to be big so I’m keeping an eye on those who will be getting on board of this wave of fast food” as he looked around at the people who were eating besides them. “I have to be getting back to the house and take care of a few things with the city business license and the bank accounts” said Flo getting up and looking for a waste can.
Leo gets up and follows her “Will see you later at home, I will be at the shop finishing a shape and will check the surf at Doheny this afternoon and might go out” said Leo as Flo is backing out from her parking space with her window rolled down. “Catch some for me” said Flo. Leo smiled and said “Ok, I will” waving side by side.
Stopping by the surf shop in Dana Point Leo is looking at the surfboards standing in the wall racks. Looking at the rockers and rails and pulling some out onto the floor to look at the outline.
“Hey Leo, how’s it going“ said the salesman. “Same mo same mo Steve, just looking at what the guys at the shop are doing. Oh by the way would you know of some surf photographers” asked Leo as he lifts a board up by the tailblock and is looking at the rail contours. “There is John down the street in Capistrano Beach. He left a few calling cards on the counter. Take one on your way out. Have you been out in the water today” asked Steve. “No, but I’m considering it” answered Leo. “The Cove is breaking pretty good with a few guys out. Doheny is Ok, but smaller” said Steve.
Leo started thinking about surfing and put the board back onto the rack and said “I think I will go down there and check it out, see you later Steve” passing the counter and picking up the business card that Steve had mentioned. Driving down the road to the pier Leo sees the waves breaking 4-6 feet and peeling off while somebody he didn’t know was getting a long ride. After finding a parking space, it wasn’t long before he had his trunks and beaver tail on and was walking on the rocks to the place where he would enter the water and paddle out from.
Knee paddling out he sees someone he had seen before, it was Phil whom he and Flo had seen before at Doheny. Phil is taking off and he fades toward the curl before doing a bottom turn. As Leo watched Phil riding the mid-section of the wave in trim as he shifts his weight and the board angles down the face of the wave. He prepares to make another bottom turn as the wave breaks behind him. Gaining speed off the turn he races to the next section of the wave. Running up to the nose a few feet from the tip he passes by Leo in a semi crouch position with both arms extended pointing forward. He riding one of the boards he had seen in the shop earlier.
Leo remembered the contour and rocker of that board as hurries out faster as another set of waves can be seen on the horizon. After riding a few waves he forgets about everything on land and is having fun thinking about catching the next wave. Two guys sitting close by were talking about the new harbor. “My friend who works in the planning department in San Clemente mentioned to me that they are going to be a yacht harbor here” said one guy. “That’s not good” said the other. Leo looked into the future and saw Dana Point Harbor and was sitting where the new breakwater was going to be.
Sitting during a lull Leo thought to himself it wouldn’t get any better for this surf spot in the years to come. I might as well enjoy it here while I can he thought as another set approached. After a while his thoughts wander back to what he has to do and starts thinking about catching the next wave in. After drying off Leo is back on the road heading home feeling refreshed physically and mentally.
Stopping by his shop and walking into his shaping room he views the blank that is lying on the shaping racks. He picks up the planer and removes a quarter inch from the outer layer of the bottom before removing a certain amount of foam from the nose and tail section. Flipping it over he begins removing the outer layer of foam from the deck. Letting the foam dust settle and having the thickness close to his general idea. He blows the foam dust from the blank and his body with the air hose.
Having decided to make the length of his board 9 feet 6 inches he places a mark on the bottom by the nose and using a tape measure he pushes the end of tape edge into the mark and pulls the tape until he reaches 9’ 6” on the tail section. Then he placed a markers 12 inches from the end of the nose and tail. With that length in mind Leo goes over to his templates and looks for a certain one that he had used recently.
After drawing the outline he stands it up against the wall and stares at the flowing curve of the outline. Not completely satisfied with the outline he walks over to the blank and places a mark a quarter inch wider at the widest point and redraws the outline. This time after looking at it he decided this was the outline and starts cutting it out with a hand saw. Jotting down some notes that he has in mind, he cleans up and calls it a day and locks up.
Leo parks his car in the garage and walks into his house where Flo was in the kitchen and making dinner. Leo says to her “I’m going to take a shower and clean-up” as he headed to the bathroom. “How was he waves at Doheny” asked Flo. Stopping in the hallway Leo says “I went out at the Dana Point Cove and the waves were fun. It was about 4-6 feet and breaking really good. Do you remember Phil from Doheny last year, well he was out and was ripping the place apart. It was Killer” as Leo entered the bathroom. Flo was trying to relate his definition of ripping apart and killer as she was stirring the stew.
The construction at the site was ahead of schedule and the warehouse and office was near completion. Flo had things under control and she and Leo were flying down to San Diego and to see their new boat “Going with the Flow”. The boat was alongside the dock when they arrived at the yard. “Wow this is nice said Flo looking at the main salon. “Yes, you guys did a great job” said Leo complimenting George and his crew. “Thank you both for giving us the opportunity to make your sailing more fun” replied George. “We will be stopping by next week to take her home” said Leo looking at Flo. “We will be taking our other boat to a yacht brokerage firm this coming week” said Flo.
The week came and went with Leo and Flo at the helm of ”Going with the Flow” and are motoring into San Diego Bay. Following the coastline with their main and jib up it wasn’t long before they could see Torrey Pines Golf course. “We should play there one of these days” said Leo as Flo was nodding her head to say yes while looking at the coastal chart with the depth lines and numbers. “Let swing further out at Carlsbad before Oceanside so this way we will be further out from Camp Pendleton and have a straight line pass Dana Point” remarked Flo looking down at the chart.
Back home Flo says to Leo after looking at the sport section of the daily paper “The United States Surfing Championship Contest at Huntington Beach Pier is tomorrow. Let’s go to that in morning and get a good spot on the Pier”. “All right that sounds interesting” said Leo. Watching the preliminary heats most of the morning Leo and Flo would come back the next day and watch the finals. The finalist would paddle out with their helmets on as the south swells broke on sandbars located near the Pier and the waves flowed through the pilings of the Pier. After the horn had sounded for the Men’s and Women’s finals the winners were Ilima Kalama and Gudie Wilkie.
Noticing the crowd at the contest Flo was taking notes on the types of clothing they were wearing which included tees, sweaters, shirts, pants and shorts. What type of patterns on the fabric, the type of collars, length of the sleeves and what age groups and gender. “Well, are you ready to go” asked Leo. “Yes, let go to Rosaritas and have lunch” said Flo still thinking of her clothing line that she wanted to do. “Ok, that sounds good to me” said Leo as they walked toward the signal to cross Pacific Coast Highway.
“After walking across to the other side and traveling south not far from the signal Leo looks into the window of the shop and sees artist supplies and stops. “Thinking about painting again” asked Flo. “It did come to mind, but this building will become well known in the future where musicians will come to play. Some of the artist who will play here will be Janis Joplin, Arlo Guthrie, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Hoyt Axton, Jackson Browne, Buffalo Springfield, Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendricks to name a few” said Leo with a Honk in the background as someone ran across the street on a red light. Walking passed the Golden Bear Leo says “This is where Sonny Vardeman will open a surf shop” as Flo looked into the vacant shop. They continued to walk towards 3rd St. where they had parked their car.
The new week began with Flo hiring her personnel and lining up her suppliers. Leo was in his shaping room at his shop and thinking about a few stocks that he was going to invest in when he got a call from his yacht broker who let him know that they sold their boat that they had put on the market and would be sending him the check. Leo would then call Flo “Hi, they just sold the Crealock. Can you get away for the afternoon, I feel like going sailing” said Leo. “I’m kinda busy, but I think I can manage going sailing with you” answered Flo. “Great, Let’s meet at the house in an hour” continued Leo as he started to look around to put away his tools.
Sailing up the coast towards Seal Beach Pier, Leo was thinking about the Surf Sphinx while looking towards the beach. “Get ready to come about and sail back home” was Leo command as he went forward to walk the jib around the mast. The afternoon winds had picked up and they were sailing down -wind at 14 knots. A couple hours later they were motoring in towards their dock.
