Episode 7 “The Great Reset”
A day after returning home it was back to the planning of what to do next. Leo and Flo were to meet with their architect regarding the plans to their clothing line facility the following week. Leo would check up on his shop and Flo would visit the Fashion Mart in Los Angeles and started lining up her suppliers. While there she would take in a few fashion shows that were happening and gets more ideas for her collection. With a sketch book in her purse, she would jot down outlines and notes that came to mind and later in the evening pursue the concept further.
Meanwhile Leo was looking into the different boats on the market and checking them out. Since Flo was busy at the Mart, Leo had time to go surf before or after checking out some boats from Santa Barbara to San Diego. Still getting back use to the colder waters of California Leo didn’t stay out as long in the water as he did before visiting Hawaii.
Having stopped at a surf shop in Dana Point after surfing Salt Creek Leo was looking at some of the surfboards there and overheard the salesman talking to a customer about a person making a beaver tail wetsuits in Santa Cruz. After asking the salesman more about the maker he found out that the maker was Jack O’Neill.
Back home Leo came across a few boat listings in San Francisco, Leo decide to take care of two birds with one stone. After visiting the boats in the Bay Area, Leo would drive over to Santa Cruz and purchase a Beaver tail wetsuit for himself and Flo and it would be shipped to them at a later date. Leo had gotten Flo measurements before making the flight there. Spending part of the day in Santa Cruz Leo would visit Pleasure Point and Steamer’s Lane before departing back to Orange County Airport.
It was Saturday and Leo and Flo felt like getting away and so they went sailing in the afternoon. Once passed the breakwater Leo steered a course south towards Laguna Beach and talked about the boats that he visited “I really like the Sparkman & Stephens 40 footer that was in San Francisco and I also like the Jenson 40 that was in Oakland, but I still want to look around some more”. After hearing what Leo had said Flo shared her experience from the week “After talking to some people at the Mart I think we will do good going into the surfwear business starting out with casual tropical shirts, Bermuda shorts and swim trunks for starters then go into sunglasses. I think this market will be good to get into” said Flo.
The breeze was light as Leo let out the jib sheet and swung the boom of the Mainsail opposite of the jib and was sailing wing on wing traveling at 5 knots. “You know the 5 acre lot might be too small for what you are talking about” replied Leo looking out for some cat’s paws ripples around his vicinity. “Yes, I was thinking the same thing” answered Flo noticing an increase in speed. “I’m going back to a starboard tack, I feel the wind is increasing” said Leo as Flo took over the helm as Leo adjusted the traveler sheet and pushed the mainsail over.
“There is a 30 acre lot in Gardena near the Harbor Freeway and another lot about the same size in Fountain Valley. Do you want to go look at them tomorrow” said Leo sitting on the starboard side of Flo watching the telltales flowing straight as the speed of the boat increased to 9 knots. “I will call the architect and reschedule our meeting” said Flo looking out in front and up at her wind vane as they sailed by Laguna Beach.
Reaching the head lands of Dana Point Flo mentioned to Leo “I’m going to jibe west and sail out in that direction for an hour and sail back home after that”. “Ok” said Leo taking a sip from his water thermos. Motoring in back to the dock of their house Leo has the bow line as Flo slowly approaches the dock. Leo jumps and cleats the bow line and walks over to the stern as Flo tosses him the stern line to be cleated. After cleaning up they go inside, Leo felt like watching TV and Flo went upstairs to her studio and was going over sketches and rethinking the size of the office and warehouse.
The next morning at breakfast Flo mentioned to Leo “I’m going to stay with the origin plans of starting the location in Costa Mesa and build from there”. “I know whatever you decide on doing will be fine with me. I have meetings with government official in Mexico and Peru in the coming months regarding our silver and gold mines and our bankers in Panama. But for now I will be going up to the shop and shape another board I have in mind after checking out the surf first. Do you want to go?” asked Leo.
Looking out the window to see if the wind had come up and noticed it hadn’t she said “Yes, I’ll go get much stuff”. Driving up to the Pier at Huntington Beach and watched a few peaky sets of 3 ft. breaking on the Northside of the Pier and they decide to go out. The fisherman on the pier was watching the tips of his rods as they paddled by out to the lineup. The water was colder on this fall morning and it was noticeable. “When do you think we will be getting our wetsuit Leo” asked Flo rubbing her hands. “Hopefully soon” said Leo as his attention shifted to the waves rolling in.
After an hour Flo was on the beach waiting for Leo to come in and was watching him after he caught a left and was riding it in. They walked back to their car and dried off and went home to take a hot shower. Leo was getting ready to go up to the shop and Flo was getting ready to meet with the architect. “We have a tee time at 2 this afternoon at the club. Don’t forget” said Flo rushing around gathering her materials for the meeting. “Ok, will do” said Leo before stepping out the door.
In his shaping room Kai’ike appears and asked “How was your trip to Hawaii”. “It was very enjoyable and we are thinking about going back soon. How are you and Hokuao” replied Leo. “Hokuao has passed on not too long ago and I have been feeling empty. I am grateful for the times we spent together and the fond memories we had shared” said Kai’ike as Leo felt a sudden sadness to his heart and held back his tears. Looking down before looking back up his voice had changed slightly when Leo said “I will always remember her for she was a fine and kind lady and will be truly missed” as the tears started to flow.
“It is alright my son, she is in peace. I feel we will be together again in the not so distant future” said Kai’ike as Leo had a frown on his face after his comment and stood there in silence for a few moments before asking “Do you foresee your time is near as well”. “Yes, I have been in contact with Alohi Hoku the Navigator and he is aware of my situation and knows that I will be transferring all my powers to you. Of what you know and being in era where things are changing it will be up to you to use the powers wisely” said Kai’ike.
“Then what I know from the past and being able to see into the future is just part of the powers you have given me. What other capabilities will I inherit” asked Leo. “One of things will be the Aura of vibrational repellant towards men or creatures who may try to attack you and another is seeing passed the intentions of those around you and read their minds. These are just a few of the powers you will notice as you grow older. Another is levitation where you can lift yourself and another if you choose to do so. There are many things I never showed you because I felt I didn’t need too” said Kai’ike.
With a sudden change in his expression Leo straightens up and places both hands on the blank he was working on as to embrace for what was going to be discussed. “When I pass on you will feel a sudden change. All my powers will be yours and the knowledge that goes with it” said Kai’ike as Leo listened and wondered. “You will foresee the changes that will occur in surfing and the monetary future, Aloha my son” continued Kai’ike as he waved and fade away.
Standing next to his shaped blank Leo is visualizing a chess board and the moves that he will make in relationship to where he is and where he would like to be. Looking at the clock he sees he needs to get to the house and meet up with Flo and go to the country club for a round of golf. Arriving home Leo goes to the garage and looks at the golf clubs and decides to cancel their tee time. He sees Flo entering the garage and tells her “Hokuao has passed on and Kai’ike will soon be joining her” as he looked at Flo who started to cry. “I’m going to cancel our tee time, I don’t feel like playing golf today. Instead let’s go sailing”.
They were out for a few hours talking about the good times they had with Kai’ike and Hokuao while looking out to the horizon and the serenity of being out in the ocean. “Kai’ike told me his powers would come to me and I will know of that time” said Leo. “It seemed like yesterday were at their hale and enjoying their company and learning to surf” said Flo. “Time sure does fly” remarked Leo watching a few pelicans glide by then focusing his attention to Flo who was steering a course back home.
“I almost forgot, I got a call before coming home from a yacht broker in San Diego and there is a 48 ft. Sparkman Stephens design available. I was thinking about going down there and looking at it tomorrow. Do you want to go” asked Leo. ” I would like to go, but I have meetings at the Mart tomorrow” said Flo. “That’s ok, I know you are on a deadline to accomplish those things on your list. I will leave early and be back later tomorrow” said Leo thinking about surfing after seeing the boat at Shelter Island.
At the yacht club Leo met up with the broker and went over to see the boat. “It has just been tied up most of the time and the owner used it for social gatherings and an occasional sail now and then. He recently been transferred to his company’s main head-quarters in Oklahoma City and decided to sell it” said Ron the yacht broker. After going through it from bow to stern Leo asked “Can we go for a sail on her”. “Why sure I know a few guys around here who can handle the rigging. It will cost you some wages if you are serious” said Ron. “Yes, let me know how much and I can pay you when they get here” said Leo.
With the broker at the helm and his crew of 3 handling the lines they rounded Point Loma and were sailing along the coast up to Mission Bay. Ron let Leo take over and Leo was noticing how she handled under varies reaches and returning to the harbor running down wind. “Well how do you like her” asked Ron. “I like her, would know of a certified boat surveyor who could check her out tomorrow” asked Leo. “Yes I know of a few and Charlie at Marine Surveyors is a good person to have the boat checked out by. I can give him a call after we get back” said Ron.
“Ok, that sounds good and I can be back tomorrow to get his review. Also would you know of a local boatyard who did custom interior work” continued Leo. “I know just the yard that does that kind of work” answered Ron.
After returning to the harbor they went over to Ron’s office and Ron called up Charlie. Charlie said “I can be over tomorrow morning around 11:00”. “That will be fine, will see you tomorrow” said Ron. “I will be back tomorrow with my wife around 12:00 and go from there” said Leo. “Where you headed now, may I ask” said Ron. “I’m going over to La Jolla and checkout the waves at WindanSea” said Leo. “Oh, you surf. So do I, I ride a 10’0” GS. You might want to check out a few spot here on the other side” said Ron.
After Ron gave Leo the directions in how to get there Leo got into his car and was just about to leave and waving to Ron and said “see you tomorrow”. Driving by Lescombs Leo sees some fun waves at the next break over. He pulls into parking area where a surfer had just gotten out and was drying off by his car. “Hi, how’s it” said Leo. “Really fun, I was out for two hours got some really fun waves” said the guy with the towel wrapped around his waist and pulling up his pants. “Say, how do you get out to those waves. I’m new to the area” said Leo.
“Well follow the path to the cliff edge and climb down to the water. The tide is going high so be careful when you come back in, it might get slippery climbing back up” said the surfer putting his board in the back of his truck. “Thanks” said Leo as he got his board out and got ready to go out. It was easy getting out and Leo had a fun time catching all the lefts with nobody else out. It was time to go in and Leo was looking for the spot to climb back up on. The spot where he first came out on had a surge flowing over the steps.
After looking over the situation Leo noticed someone else was going out. “Hey hand me your board” said the surfer. Leo got off his board and lifted it by the tail section to the guy who grabbed the nose and placed it in the bushes, then said “Place your foot on that ledge and grab my hand”. Leo did just that and was back on flat land. “Thanks, appreciate your advice” said Leo. “I usually get back in over there, but jump off here” said the older guy pointing over to an area around the corner of the cliff and he continued “There is a plateau with bigger steps over there”.
“Thank you again” said Leo picking up his board and watched as the old guy tossed his board in and he soon followed. Going through Ocean Beach and back on to the Coast Highway after taking some side roads Leo drove home in a few hours. After getting back he walks in and sees Flo reading a brochure in the Living Room. “What did you think about the boat” asked Flo. “I liked it very much and having a surveyor checking it out tomorrow. Are you busy tomorrow I flying down there and if it is alright then I’m going to have the interior changed on it” said Leo. “I will go with you tomorrow” said Flo knowing she would reschedule her agenda for the following week.
Leo and Flo flew down to Linbergh Field the next morning and rented a car to meet Ron at his office. Walking into his office Ron greeted Leo, “Ron this is my wife Flo she will going over with us to the boat” said Leo. “It is nice to meet you Flo and may I offer you coffee or water from your long trip here” said Ron thinking that they had drove all the way. “Thank you, but I will pass” said Flo. “Well shall we go out to the boat and see Charlie, he should be finishing his review” replied Ron.
Going out to the parking lot of the harbor Ron, Leo and Flo made their way to the dock and were walking towards the boat. Charlie was finishing his surveying papers and had his back to the group. “Charlie how’s it going, I have Mr. and Mrs. Vi with me to find out about your survey” said Ron. Charlie turns and faces the group and looks at Leo and Leo looks at him. “Weren’t you out at the Cliffs yesterday” asked Leo. “Small world isn’t it” said Charlie smiling and extending his hand and shaking Leo’s hand. Ron looked at Charlie and then at Leo and said “Do you know each other”.
“I was surfing the Cliffs yesterday and Charlie helped me out of the water by giving me a hand” said Leo. “Well Charlie, what is your opinion regarding the inspection” asked Ron. “She is in good condition with no dry rot, leaks and everything works. The previous owner took good care of her” said Charlie. Flo looked at Leo as Leo turned to Ron and said “We have deal. Is there a boat yard that does custom interior work, Flo and I want a few changes done”. Charlie looked at Ron and Ron said “I know of a couple of places and will see who is available to do the work”.
“Can we discuss this over lunch, where can we go” asked Flo. “What about a Mom and Pop’s restaurant” said Ron pointing at the entrance to Shelter Island. Charlie would follow the group in Ron’s car and would meet them inside the restaurant. After placing their orders Ron asked “How was your drive down from Newport Beach”. “Actually we flew our jet here” said Flo. Charlie looked at Ron, then Ron and Charlie looked at Leo. “We have a jet ” Leo remarked. “That’s interesting” said Ron. “Have you made some long distant flights” asked Charlie.
“Yes we have, we recently came back from Hawaii” said Leo. “When you mentioned real estate previously as your line of work, I didn’t think it was at this scale where you flew in a jet, but don’t get me wrong. Last year I sold a 100 ft. schooner to a lady who was giving it to his son for his 18th birthday” commented Ron. Leo started to laugh and said “You can say we are kinda like that, but for us It is just one of those things we use as a tool and we try to stay grounded in our way of thinking. Flo and I are surfers just like your selves and understand the ways of the ocean is like the ways of life” said Leo.
Ron and Charlie started talking about surf stories and Leo and Flo would share some of theirs. After an half an hour the group made their way back to the parking lot. Charlie had another appointment and Ron would take Leo and Flo over Harbor Custom Yacht Interiors. There they met up with George whom Ron had contacted before leaving the office to the docks and mentioned that they would most likely be there in the afternoon. “George this is Leo and Flo who recently purchased the 48 Sparksman Stephens at Shelter Island. They would like to change the interior and have your yard do it” said Ron. “Hey Ron you son of a gun and it’s nice to meet you Leo and Flo” said George.
“George can you give a tour of your yard to Leo and Flo” said Ron. “Sure, it will be my pleasure” said George. And so George took them around showing all the boats that were being worked on. Leo and Flo were impressed and made arrangements to meet with George the following week at their boat to do a walk thru of what they would like to have done. After their meeting with George they went back to Ron’s office to pick up their rental car. Leo and Flo would spend the rest of the day onboard their newly acquired boat and talk about things they would like changed. Flo took pictures of the interior jotted down notes. Returning to Lindbergh Field, they flew back to Orange County airport in 20 minutes.
Driving into their driveway Flo sees a box at their front door, it was from Santa Cruz. “Leo we have a box from Santa Cruz” said Flo. “It’s the wetsuits for us from O’Neill Wetsuits. I can hardly wait to try it out tomorrow” said Leo picking up the box and taking it inside. After opening the box Leo tried on his beavertail wetsuit jacket. “It is warm, this is going to make surfing a little bit more better” said Leo trying to takeoff his wetsuit jacket. Leo had a difficult time pulling his arms from the sleeves. But finally got them off after a few minutes “I forgot to put cornstarch on the inside as was mentioned by clerk before leaving the shop in Santa Cruz” Leo continued.
The next morning Leo and Flo were out in the water with their wetsuit jackets. “I feel much more warmer, but my legs are still cold. Eventually they will make a full length suit and that will be terrific” said Flo while paddling out. After about an hour Leo said to Flo “I think I’m developing a rash under my arm pit”. “You might want to place some vasoline in both your armpits next time” said Flo. “Good idea” remarked Leo as he paddled for another wave.
After their surf session and back at the car Leo says to Flo “Well we stayed out longer with these wetsuit jackets. I like the warmth, but will call up the shop and see if they can alter a new jack around the armpit areas”. “Mine fit just right. Let’s go have breakfast at that one restaurant on Brookhurst St.” said Flo taking her jacket off. “Ok” said Leo.
Sitting at their table drinking their coffees after ordering Flo says to Leo “I have that meeting with the architect today”. “That’s right, what time is it” asked Leo. “3 this afternoon” said Flo. Tapping his left index finger on the table Leo said “Do you want to meet there or at the house first”. “Let’s meet there I will be coming from the Mart” said Flo. “Ok, I will be om Santa Monica picking up some blanks this morning then be back at the shop glassing some boards” said Leo noticing the waitress coming to their table with the food.
Suddenly Leo felt like his mind was spinning and sat back without saying a word. Flo looked at him and became concerned. “What is it Leo” asked Flo. Raising his left hand and pausing for a moment “I’m Ok , just felt dizzy for a moment” replied Leo as the waitress placed the plate in front of Flo and then in front of Leo. “There you go, enjoy” said the waitress while looking at Leo before leaving.
Leo watched as the waitress left before saying “I felt Kai’ike’s powers entering into me and started thinking what he had said to me the last time we talked. I think I’m going to take the day off and gather my senses and recollect today” said Leo still looking like in a daze. “Should I stay with you today and cancel my appointments” said Flo. “Yes, I know I’m going through some changes and it would be good to have you next to me as I absorb the new powers bestowed to me by Kai’ike. I feel hungry for many things” said Leo looking down at his breakfast. Returning home they sat around the pool and remanence about Kai’ike and Hokuao.
While still recollecting their experiences of the past, Leo is looking out at the channel where a sailboat was going out of the harbor. His imagination follows the vessel out onto the ocean and the thought of all the possibilities that awaited him and Flo. He started thinking about their boat that was being refitted, the places they were going to and the investments that he would make in the stock market.
