In an olive grove that is dedicated to the goddess Athena outside the city walls of Athens, a teacher of politics is moving around in front of his class lecturing his views on the Good life “Good actions give strength to ourselves and inspire good actions in others” said Plato looking at his class, then towards the Parthenon. “Excuse me Plato” Axiothea called out and interrupted Plato train of thought. “Yes, what is it that you wish to know” responded Plato. “It is about Atlantis and its advance way of life, would you know of it” asked Axiothea as she looked at Plato with curiosity of what she had heard earlier. Plato looked at Axiothea and then turned toward the West pass the Pillars of Hercules and the clouds beyond.
Some 8700 years before the question was asked, we are on the island of Etobiius a satellite city state of Atlantis located in the south eastern sector of the Caribbean. On this island a marble structure is located on the western slope of Mt. Orga facing the ocean. A meeting is being held by the Council of Scholars and the Governor.
“Staroverticus what say you regarding the forecast for the week” asked Leuquotus the Governor of the island. “By looking at the clouds and time of season, there approaches a severe storm in the category of Hurican force winds” replied Staroverticus the Astronomer.
“Systovial prepare for the winds, have your men take down the screen net of the Dome campus and reinstall and bolt down the wooden roofing for all rooms, the same for the outer perimeter residences. The main campus where the academy is located is called the Dome of Knowledge. It was designed in a circle of 72 feet radius to the center with a circular wall of 21 feet high at the perimeter of the first circle with 24 inch thick vertical wooden beams reaching 55 feet in height where a central post is situated. There are 18 beams radiating out from the center to the outer edge of the dome resting on and are anchored to the top of the wall. The top portion of the beam has steps where a person can walk to the top center for changing the roofing configuration be it canvas or netting.
There are 2 horizontal rib beams circling around and connecting the horizontal framing to the vertical beams. The framing is spaced out at 21 feet apart. The beam continues from the first circle to another circular wall 55 feet from the inner wall and is 8 feet in height, with 2 more horizontal rib beam circling the secondary space. A canvas or screen netting is used for sunny and rainy days with rain gutters catching the rain and stored in containers in certain rooms within the structure.
There are running water and water closet within the structure and the plumbing of waste water flows downhill of the campus and residential areas and is collected into many catch basins that has leach piping and a central large covered basin that it flows into. It then goes into another large basin where it is filled with salt water and diluted, it is then discharge into a 24” clay pipe which is extended out a 100 yards into the ocean and the outgoing waste is released with the outgoing tide every few days.
Returning back to the meeting “Merananon have your men and women take account of the stores of food and water at the main warehouse and be ready when the time comes” said Leuquotus looking over at Merananon who is charge of the agriculture, along with food and water storage. “Some of the orchards will be destroyed, but we have a backup plan of trees in movable planter, they can be moved into warehouses built into the slopes of the mountains, the same for the vegetable crops in rolling planter beds. We have enough supplies for one year and our naval and fishing fleet has moved over to the Safe Harbor” reported Merananon.
“Medicusum what is the status in your department” asked Leuquotus. “The main shelter is prepared with extra cots and supplies. Our supplies in medicinal plant extracts are sufficient and the people has been informed of the procedure once the alarm is set off for the incoming storm” said Medicusum. Very well, return to your duties and classes and get ready for the storm” said Leuquotus who stood up and adjourned the meeting.
“General Cartuveral how is my son Stiforte doing in your class” asked the mathematician Numerouno. “He is doing very well, he is one of my brightness students” answered General Cartuveral as a smile came to the face of Numerouno as they left the meeting. Following behind them were Astronomer Staroverticus and Governor Leuquotus.” Staroverticus have you seen Ambassador Outaforium lately” asked Leuquotus. “I did, about a few days ago at his residence” answered Staroverticus.
“And” continued Leuquoutus. “He had been in communication with the aliens who had stopped by his area. They shared some information regarding a engine system for a vessel with using oars of sails”. “Then what happened” asked Leuquotus. “After that Outaforium had a meeting with Admiral Neptatuno and they discussed a vessel using the engine on different size ships” answered Staroverticus pausing for a moment before continuing. “The Admiral said he would have a few of his naval architect instructors begin drawing up plans to build a vessel with the engines. Not sure at what stage they are at in the planning” concluded Staroverticus placing his right hand on his chin.
After the meeting Leuquotus is walking by the center court of the Dome when he happens to see Outaforium. “Outaforium may I have a word with you” said Leuquotus. “Why yes, what is it” he answered back. “I heard the aliens has shared some information about an engine systems for vessels” Leuquotus asked. “Yes, and I informed Admiral Neptatuno about it and he is working on a scale model of it currently” said Outaforium.
At a local beach a group of young friends are on their hydrofoils platform in the shape of a symmetrical leaf with the front and back ends squared, that they had built. Having done the research in class and constructed their designs in a shop environment. They are the next generation to contribute to the advancement of their civilization. From their studies some will become leaders in politics, other in military affairs, while most will venture into other fields.
But for now they are moving across the waters near the beach after riding the wave to shore. Gliding around they would squat pushing down and then up while leaning forward and creating the inertia in which the principle of flow, speed and balance are incorporated. The competitive nature of these friends can be seen as they race back out into deeper waters to catch another wave.

The friends are getting out of the water and placing their hydrofoils onto a portable rack that can accommodate 2 boards. It was designed by Zeumo to make it easy to move to the beach and restore the boards back to the storage yard by one person. The racks were placed near a natural made waterfall shower of a small stream flowing over a small cliff next to the beach. As they walked over to the shower Myrotheus says to Zeumo “I have to stop by the harbor and see Dartolo, he needs my opinion in designing a new fishing boat”. “I have some time before my next class, can I come along” asked Zeumo as they were waiting to use the shower. “Ok” said Myrotheus.
Zeumo was looking over to Abethena who was first to take a shower and asked “Your foiling is much better. You seemed to have adjusted to it quite well”. “Oh thank you, I made adjustments to my stance and got into a rhythm” she said with a smile. “You are naturally gifted and you caught on fast compared to us guys” Zeumo complimented her. “The next foil I make I’m going to make some adjustments to the curvature of the foil and shaft, as well as the weight of the entire board” replied Abethena smiling and looking at Zeumo with interest as the water flowed over the side of her head as she turned to wash the saltwater from her entire body before getting out.
Next was Myrotheus, then Zeumo followed by Stiforte. Stiforte was concentrating on his homework in astronomy, strategic military studies and the project of the underwater vessel that he was a part of. As Abethena, Myrotheus and Zeumo were in discussion while drying off with towels. The group waited for Stiforte. Zeumo calls out “We don’t have all day, let get going Stiforte”. Turning and looking at them, he got the messages and stepped out from under the water and dried off.
Working as a team one would pull and the other would push the racks back to the storage locker. It was much easier to use the rack than carrying the awkward shaped hydrofoil by itself to the storage facility that was a hundred yards away. “See everyone tomorrow” replied Abethena as she waved and went on her way. Myrotheus, Zeumo and Stiforte were walking up the road to the fork in the road. Stiforte took the high road back to the campus and Myrotheus and Zeumo took the low road to the harbor.
Along the way Myrotheus and Zeumo crossed paths with the Philosopher Farofatis who happened to be on a daily walk after visiting the harbor. “How are you Sir” asked Myrotheus. “Good, thank you” replied Farofatis who is wearing a gray brim hat and a gray robe, he had a wooden walking cane to help in moments of need. “Farofatis what is the purpose of life” asked Zeumo seeking to enhance his knowledge. “What is the purpose of life” he paraphrased the question before answering. “The pursuit of Happiness and the attainment of it” answered Faroftis looking at the two young men before adding to his answer.
“The Purpose of what you seek can guide your decisions regarding the responsibilities to your friends or family, thus having an effect on your behavior. Then in turn guides the direction in which you are going and develops into a meaning of your choice”. The two friends stood in silence contemplating the insight that Farofatis had just conveyed to them. “Have you two developed a passion for something you want to do” asked Farofatis. “I enjoy learning about many things and haven’t thought about it in that contexts” answered Zeumo. “Your passion can be anything that challenges you, or intrigues and motivates you and it is something that you're willing to decide on over other things. I can see you two will do well on this road that you travel on. Continue with your studies and learn” Farofatis concluded the conversation by pinching the brim of his hat and nodded while saying “Good day” before continuing on his way.
Myrotheus and Zeumo resumed their conversation before stopping and looking back at Faroftis, then at each other. ”What do you think Zeumo” asked Myrotheus. “We have a long ways to go compared to Farofatis” replied Zeumo. They arrived at the harbor and walked over to Dartolo’s boat where he and his deck hands were busy getting ready to move his boat to the Safe Harbor of the Westside of the island. He was told earlier of the coming storm and was getting ready to depart.
“Myrotheus there has been a change in plans. I was informed of a pending storm and I must hurry to the Safe Harbor in preparation of the storm. I thank you for coming and I do want to get your ideas on a new boat, but for now I must leave” replied Dartolo as he pointed to one deckhand to pushed off with an oar off the docks and wave at Myrotheus and Zeumo as he steered clear of the dock. “Well that’s that. Let go back to the campus and see what is happening there. There might be a lecture we can sit in on” said Myrotheus. Zeumo agreed and they began walking back to the fork in the road.
Abethena reached home and sees her neighbor Helena returning from class. “How was your class” asked Abethena. “It went well and I learned a lot in agriculture today, but a few of the boys were paying more attention to me than their studies” answered Helena. A smile came to Abethena after hearing Helena day’s experience about the boys in her class. Then they would continue theirs discussion about the class and the latest gossip of what the other girls were doing.
“You know Diana is very serious about Clementus and he her. Diana says they will marry, but haven’t told their parents yet” mentioned Abethena. “I knew that they liked each other, but how will they manage” questioned Helena. “Clementus and Diana will live at her parent’s house at first. Then Clementus will seek employment and go to school part time. He will apply for a loan through the governor’s office and build a house of their own” said Abethena.
Back at the academy Stiforte was looking over the plans of the engine system in a vessel on the front table of the class with Demetatres his fellow classmate. “What do you make of this design” asked Demetatres as the other select few was looking at the diagram with them. “It is much more advance than anything taught to us previously and it is going take some time to make it happen” said Stiforte.
“Please take your seats Admiral Neptatuno would like to go over this project with you all” said Captain Ysathora one of the officers / instructors involved in the project. The Admiral stepped up to the front of class and began his speech. “Earlier this week our Supreme Commander General Cartuveral came to me with this diagram that is on the table. He wanted me to be in charge of this project that I’m going to tell you. He first became aware of it by Ambassador Outaforium, who from his previous experiences with the Star people was given these drawings. They communicated with him by an invisible voice coming from the sky as he was sitting in his backyard.
They, meaning those behind the voice wanted to share an idea for him to think about. If he was successful they may share other ideas with us. Answering the voice in our language he said yes, they forwarded the plans by way of light to his table that was close by” said Admiral Neptatuno pointing to the diagrams on the table in the class.
“They said if we can solve what lay before him, a whole new world was at our door step. He the ambassador looked up to see a flying saucer vessel above him which disappear in the blink of an eye” said the Admiral placing his right hand on his forehead before continuing “I would like to introduce you to Brigadier commander Yuratotacles who will introduce his Captains / Instructors of this project. Commander Yuratotacles”
The commander step forward and introduce his captains. “Besides being instructors here at the academy, they are also officers of the military operations on this island. May I introduce Captain Marsutus in charge of the propulsion group, Captain Fluidious in charge of the hydrodynamic structure of the vessel, and Captain Accounto in charge of system integration, logistics and cost. Each group will have four students and they will work with the captains. We do not know the duration of this project and will be reevaluated every three months”.
The captains started calling out the students names that will be part of their group. Captain Marutus called out Stiforte and Demetatres along with Pterathemum and Diangus. The other captains called out their students and the groups began organizing their agendas and schedules. Captain Marutus told his group that they will meet after the storm at the Safe Harbor to go over some ideas regarding the plans. Leaving the meeting with his fellow members in the group Stiforte looked over to Demetatres who said “The main question is, what materials is going to be used and where are we going to get it” Stiforte continued walking as he thought about whales, porpoises, turtles and he said “We have to think outside the box Demetatres”.
At the central forum within the Dome a crowd had gathered and Myrotheus and Zeumo are listening to Astronomer Staroverticus who was talking about the sun and how the earth and the planets circled around it to cause the seasons. Alongside of him was Mathematician Numerouno who interjected how many days it took to make one cycle and how it related to the calendar by the day, the week and the month.“Look Zeumo, its Stiforte on the other side of the stage. Let’s go see him” remarked Myrotheus as they started to walk over to him. ”Hey Stiforte, what are you up too” asked Zeumo. “Taking a break from my project class, I felt overwhelmed going over some drawing and trying to figure out to develop it and thought of asking my father some question in regards to that” said Stiforte looking over to his father.
“Ok, I feel like getting something to eat, can you meet us at the market place after you talk with your father. We can go over to the theater and watch a play this afternoon” remarked Zeumo. “Sorry guys about the play, but I can meet at the market place. I need get some food before going back to the project. Myrotheus and Zeumo was sitting on a bench by a tree when Stiforte came up to them. “Have some bread and goat cheese, take what you want we have plenty” said Myrotheus as Stiforte pulled a piece of bread and cut a piece of cheese. “That hit the spot, sure was hungry” said Stiforte chewing on the bread. “Here have some water” said Zeumo handing Stiforte a horned leather pouch with the opening in the horn capped.
“So how is the project coming along Stiforte” asked Zeumo. “There is a lot to understand and figure out. It is uncharted waters as far as I am concerned” said Stiforte. “Go with the flow and you will get there” said Zeumo. “I think your suggestion just open the door to the possibilities” remarked Stiforte in an excited expression after a revelation came to him. “I did” said Zeumo. “Yes you did” said Stiforte picking up an apple and taking a bite before rushing back to his classroom to review the drawings.
“I have to be going home Zeumo. I will see you later” said Myrotheus. “Yes I will be leaving soon myself” replied Zeumo picking up a cluster of grapes and began eating them one by one. Sitting there watching the crowd walk by. A voice that he knew says “What are you up to Zeumo” as he turned to see it was Abethena. “Care for some grapes” said Zeumo grabbing a bunch and placing it in front of him. “Why yes. Thank you” she said as a smile came to Zeumo.
“What are you doing here” he asked. “I’m on an errand for my mother. She wanted some vegetables and meat for dinner tonight and sent me here” was her response. “Well, may I be of assistance” he asked. “Sure, let go check it out” she continued. Zeumo got up, put his supplies in the basket that he had purchased. “Hows your day been” she asked. “Well, I think I have been transformed somewhat from rough to smooth in my way of viewing peace of mind” he said looking into her eyes and trying to impress her with sophistication in the words that he has chosen.
“Well, well I can see that the day has given you enlightenment beyond what I expected you to say” Abethena said with a chuckle. “Come my lady and we shall go forth and procure your items” as he extended his elbow out and she wrap her left arm around it. “Shall we go my prince” she said with a smile as they walked into the crowd of shoppers.
Governor Leuquotus and General Cartuveral are talking about the coming storm. “The warning has been given and the troops and residence are getting ready” said the General. “Good” answered the Governor looking down toward the Safe Harbor in the Bay of Tranquility a mile away. In the Safe Harbor Dartolo has lashed his boat to the previous boat that had entered before him with cushioned fenders between them. Within the harbor there were large marble walls embedded into the bay sea floor. Each wall was 12 feet high, 2 thick and 144 feet long with an opening of 96 feet between each wall for the boats to fit in. There was a floating dock for each wall in the event of a storm surge of water.
The Harbor Master was in charge and made sure the lines were secure and with each boat’s captain and crew are registered with the office and procedures in place for before, during and after the storm. “Well, everything is secured and locked up Dartolo” said Barto one of Dartolo deck hands. “Good, we will meet back here after the storm” said Dartolo to Barto and Salmino as they went from one boat to another to get to the dock under the watchful eyes of the Harbor Master men on the docks.
The following day there was a calm in the morning before the clouds came in and “The Horns of Danger” sounded and the winds began to increase, the people of the city went to their shelters. The main force of the winds hit with torrential rains flooding the streets and roads. The hollowing winds and the debris flying lasted for two hours. Then calm came and the people went out to survey the damage. But before the all clear sign was called, another warning was being issued. The horns of danger were once again blown to indicate the tail end of storm was approaching and the people again prepared for the deluge. With the storm passing the days after returned to normal and everyone went back to their routine.
Zeumo stops by to see Myrotheus and he sees him with his head bent with both his hand on the small block wall in front of his parent’s house. “What is wrong Myrotheus” asked Zeumo. “My friend Dartolo was killed during the storm. A wooden board in front of his window had come loose and water was coming into his house. He went outside to fix it and a flying branch struck and killed him” answered Myrotheus taking a breath and exhaling a memory “I was remembering days gone by when I was younger and he would take me fishing and the fun times we had. I will never forget the lessons that he taught me while growing up” as a tears came to his eyes.
Putting his arm around his friend’s shoulder with sympathy Zeumo said to Myrotheus “It is those memories of happy times that he has left for you. Find strength in those times to carry on”. Myrotheus stood and looked at Zeumo and said “Thank you my friend, I find comfort in your words” as he would go on and tell of his adventures of fishing and catching of fish with Dartolo.
